Getting around the city

Thessaloniki has a good public transportation system. Getting around is feasible by bus and taxis as both are easily available at low cost. Thessaloniki is not a huge city (population around 1,000,000 people). Hence, most famous attractions can be easily explored on foot. All major car rental companies have branches at Macedonia Airport.

Public Transportation

Public transport in Thessaloniki is served by buses and the operating bus company is the Thessaloniki Urban Transport Organization (OASTH). The fleet consists of 604 vehicles on 75 routes throughout the Thessaloniki Metropolitan Area je link na Thessaloniki Metropolitan Area. International and regional bus links start from Macedonia InterCity Bus Terminal, located west of the city centre.

Bus Tickets

Standard adult tickets:

1 € REGULAR FARE – SINGLE TRIP TICKETS - valid ONLY for ONE (1) trip

Pre-printed regular tickets may be purchased at OASTH ticket selling booths, at 1000 points of sale throughout the metropolitan area of Thessaloniki, or at ticket vending machines on-board buses (excluded bus lines: 50 CULTURAL ROUTE, 01Χ & 01N AIRPORT - INTERCITY BUS TERMINAL)

1.20 € TWO-TRIP 70-MINUTE TICKETS - valid for TWO (2) bus trips to/from any direction and any bus route within 70 minutes of validation.

Longer duration tickets for up to two (2) uses are valid for 2 trips to and from any direction and any bus route within 70 minutes from their first validation (excluded bus lines: 50 CULTURAL ROUTE, 01Χ & 01N AIRPORT - INTERCITY BUS TERMINAL) .

Please note that if the second validation is made within 70 minutes of the first, the ticket is valid until the completion of the second journey.

Pre-printed longer duration tickets for up to two (2) trips may be purchased at OASTH ticket selling booths and at 1000 points of sale throughout the metropolitan area of Thessaloniki.

1.50 € THREE-TRIP 90-MINUTE TICKETS - valid for THREE (3) bus trips to/from any direction and any bus route within 90 minutes of validation.

Longer duration tickets for up to three (3) uses (Regular or Discounted Fare) are valid for 3 trips to and from any direction and any bus route within 90 minutes from their first validation (excluded bus lines: 50 CULTURAL ROUTE, 01Χ & 01N AIRPORT - INTERCITY BUS TERMINAL) .

Please note that if the third validation is made within 90 minutes of the first, the ticket is valid until the completion of the third journey.

Pre-printed longer duration tickets for up to three (3) trips may be purchased only at OASTH ticket selling booths.

2 € FOUR-TRIP 120-MINUTE TICKETS -valid for FOUR (4) bus trips to/from any direction and any bus route within 120 minutes of validation.

Longer duration tickets for up to four (4) uses (Regular or Discounted Fare) are valid for 4 trips to and from any direction and any bus route within 120 minutes from the time they are issued (if they are issued inside the bus) or from their first validation (if they are pre-printed), (excluded bus lines: 50 CULTURAL ROUTE, 01Χ & 01N AIRPORT - INTERCITY BUS TERMINAL).

Please note that if the fourth validation is made within 120 minutes of the first, the ticket is valid until the completion of the fourth journey.

This is the legal passenger fare on routes within the municipalities of the Lagadas District, provided that at least one transfer is made in Lagadas.

Pre-printed longer duration tickets for up to four (4) trips may be purchased only at OASTH ticket selling booths and / or at ticket vending machines on-board buses.

Taxi

Taxi rides in Greece are economic. Roughly, a taxi within the city will cost you approximately 5€ .Between 00:00 and 05:00, a double fare will be applicable.

Transfers from Thessaloniki Airport to the city centre

Public bus service is available 24 hours a day from the airport to the city centre, bus number 01X or o1N. These bus services operate from the airport approximately every 30 minutes. One-way tickets cost 2€. More details can be found here.

The taxi fare to the city center is approximately 15–20€ from 5:00 am to 00:00 pm, while from 00:00 pm to 5:00 am expect to be charged an extra 10€ for this particular route.

All banks are open to the public from Monday to Thursday from 8:00 to 14:30, except Friday where they close at 14:00. The beaches

The closest quality beach you can visit from Thessaloniki for a swim is located in Perea, less than 20 kilometers from the city center. The beach there is usually quiet and the quality is quite good. For those looking to venture a bit further away from the city to enjoy the sun, the province of Halkidiki is literally full of spotless beaches and pristine coastlines waiting to be explored.

Shopping in Thessaloniki

Greece is the ideal place to shop a wide variety of products. Prices are reasonable and there are goods for all budgets. Shops are open (during the summer period) Monday through Friday from 09.00 till 21.00. On Saturdays, shops stay open from 09.00 till 15.00, while they are closed on Sundays.
